March 13, 2024The Origins of International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8, is a global holiday that honors the achievements of women and promotes women’s rights. Let’s delve into the fascinating history of this significant day:
A Movement Takes Shape
The roots of IWD trace back to the early 20th century. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding better working conditions, shorter hours, and the right to vote.
The following year, in 1909, the first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States on February 28. It was organized by the Socialist Party of America to advocate for women’s suffrage.
Inspired by these events, the International Women’s Conference held in Copenhagen in 1910 proposed an annual International Women’s Day to promote equal rights and suffrage for women worldwide.
The United Nations and IWD
In 1975, the United Nations officially began celebrating IWD, declaring it “International Women’s Year.”
In 1977, the UN invited member countries to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for Women’s Rights and World Peace. Since then, IWD has been observed globally on this date.
